Canned light tuna or albacore. Which is safer?

In January, 2011, Consumer Reports magazine analyzed 42 cans and pouches of tuna purchased in the New York metropolitan area. The light tuna samples averaged 0.07 parts per million of mercury, while the albacore averaged 0.43 ppm. That’s six times more mercury in albacore tuna! These results are consistent with surveys of canned tuna from other cities.

Young children and women who are pregnant or nursing or who might become pregnant within a year should limit canned albacore tune to no more than 1½ ounces a week for every 50 pounds they weigh, according to Nutrition Action Healthletter. Others can safely consume up to three times that much of each.

Individuals having a high waist-to-hip ratio (larger waist circumference in proportion to their hip circumference) had nearly double the mortality rate as opposed to people with no “spare tire” regardless of their body mass index (BMI).
